Eric Dimperio's MDFT Tutorial

The purpose of this site is to provide an introduction to the Multi-attribute Decision Field Theory (Roe, Busemeyer, & Townsend) for choice behavior. The tutorial is complimented by an applet that allows one to visualize the choice process and manipulate some model parameters. The tutorial and applet have been developed by Eric Dimperio.

Warning

This is a work in progress, but I am making things available as they come along. Any suggestions for changes in the applet will be considered. Send them to Eric at edimperi @ indiana . edu.

The Applet

You can find the applet here. There currently exists some basic instructions on how to operate the applet. It should be noted that the applet is currently imposing some constraints that are not necessarily part of the model. The most significant constraints are the scaling for attribute values (0.0 - 1.0) and the values of the lateral inhibition. The lateral inhibition is responsible for some of the powerful predictions of MDFT. The theory merely claims that the inhibition is a monotonically decreasing function of distance in parameter space. This model constrains that to be the linear function i*(sqrt(2) - distance) where i is controlled by the user.

Standalone application

You can download a self-extracting file here. This currently only works for PCs. Also, make sure your JAVA is up to date.
